Oakstone Academy Kindergarten

The kindergarten program is a full day program. The curriculum is a general education curriculum, which includes experiences in reading, language arts, math, science, social studies, and handwriting. Science and social studies are taught through literature and include hands-on experiences that correlate with the Ohio Content Standards. The mathematics curriculum, also correlated with Ohio Math Standards, includes hands-on experiences as well as pencil and paper activities. Manipulatives are used during instruction to help students master the concepts. There is a focus on the development of independent learning skills, social skills, and language.

Our curriculum is a mix of large and small group instruction and small group explorative learning, which take place in structured centers. We use the Reading Mastery curriculum as our primary reading curriculum. We enhance the reading program with whole language activities, informal reading activities, and the Edmark reading curriculum.

We use Handwriting Without Tears to develop handwriting skills. Exploration and creativity with a variety of art media is also integrated into the curriculum. Beginning creative writing happens through journaling along with a variety of curriculum-related writing topics. Kindergarten students also participate in art, physical education, and foreign language classes.
